Alongside our own eco-friendly email marketing tool, here are our top tips to make the world greener through email.
Switch To A Sustainable Email Marketing Platform
Intrigued by what we just mentioned above about EcoSend?
If you’ve never heard of us before, you can maximise the following tips for eco-friendly marketing practices by switching to a sustainable email marketing provider.
One report suggests 620 million tonnes of carbon will be produced by the 347 billion emails which will be sent in 2023.
We wanted to do something to fix this now - EcoSend is what we came up with.
How EcoSend works is that our systems run on renewable energy sources. We also plant trees on behalf of your business just for using us. Some of our profits are also being re-invested into climate-related causes.
We give you everything you need to send incredible email marketing campaigns that sell - but without the carbon emissions attached.
So we’d highly encourage every business which is keen to be more sustainable to check us out, since none of the other email marketing platforms are yet to tackle the issue.
You can sign up for EcoSend for free, to see if it’s the right fit for your business before you sign on the dotted line.
We also have a podcast 🎙 and a YouTube channel 🎥 where you can get to know us, and discover why EcoSend is so important to the email marketing space.
We’ll see you there! 👋
Reduce Your Email File Size
Pro tip: 💡 Did you know you can search your mailbox for previously sent or received emails, and arrange them by size?
The larger an email is in file size, the more energy it will take to send and receive that email.
The BBC found that the typical email emits up to 4g of CO2. For emails with photo attachments, emissions can jump to around 50g of carbon. Considering over 300 billion emails are sent each day, that soon adds up.
So in addition to switching to EcoSend, within all emails you send - look to keep your messaging short, sweet and light in file size.
For instance, consider whether photo attachments are necessary. If so, can the image size be reduced, or the file format be changed to reduce the overall size?
While most email providers (i.e. Gmail) cap attachments at 25mb, this still doesn’t solve the problem - since each time this email is opened or forwarded, its carbon emissions will continue to jump. Instead, we as users need to change our email habits to become greener.
Mike Berners-Lee wrote a book called ‘How Bad Are Bananas? The Carbon Footprint of Everything’. In it, he estimated an email of just 1mb can produce 19g of CO2. If that email is forwarded, then it can reach those higher levels of carbon emissions we mentioned above - as much as 50g. Even if the email started out as a small file to begin with.
Therefore, reducing email sizes and also only forwarding emails where necessary can reduce the overall carbon footprint of email.
Use Segmentation To Send Targeted Emails
Send-to-all email blasts don’t work as a sales technique. Mass email sending is also bad for the planet too.
So to fix both of these issues in one easy move, use segmentation.
Segmentation involves sending the right message to the right customer at the right time. As well as saving your business money, segmentation can actually deliver a much better ROI on your email marketing.
If all that wasn’t good enough, your business will reduce its carbon emissions, because unnecessary emails that are unlikely to be opened or interacted with aren’t being sent.
To make the benefits of segmentation even clearer, imagine you are having a party. Segmented invites would include only inviting friends and family (i.e. those you want to be there/show up).
However, mass invite sending would involve messaging your entire contact list. We don’t know, but this could include the likes of your ex-boss, your doctor, your local takeaway and people you used to go to school with who now live abroad. Honestly, it could be anyone!
Now think about your business and send-to-all email blasts, and their wastefulness soon becomes clear, especially when relevance for every recipient cannot be guaranteed. You’re also paying to send these irrelevant emails, don’t forget.
Add on unnecessary carbon emissions too, and a lack of segmentation just isn’t eco-friendly, let alone logical.
Send Email Receipts Instead Of Physical Printouts
If your business sells any kind of physical products or sends any kind of paperwork to customers through the post - it’s time to go digital.
Email receipts have been around for some time now. Though many companies still haven’t adopted the technology at all or to the highest possible extent.
While an email recipient might still be an …email, there are lots you can do to reduce your emissions, especially compared with using paper in your business. For instance, digital receipts can contain a minimal amount of information, without any branding or heavy graphics to keep the file sizes as low as possible.
Also, email receipts help create a digital customer database. Alongside customer information, you can also find out more about customer purchasing habits.
All of which is better for providing great customer engagement, as well as understanding your sales patterns more clearly.
Encourage Subscribers To Be More Eco-Friendly
Finally, you can make the world a greener place within your email campaigns themselves.
Namely, by highlighting any sustainable product alternatives you offer. Or even encouraging community projects to get your subscribers involved with green initiatives.
We know that email marketers are incredibly talented and creative, so we encourage you to put your thinking caps on here.
As individuals and businesses, we can all use email for the greater good, and there’s no better place to start than helping the planet.
