The hidden weight of a beautiful email

Big images look great — until they don't load. Here's what all that weight is costing you, and the fixes you can make.

The best-looking email campaign you’ve sent is probably your slowest for recipients to open.

If you're sending a campaign for an event or for a product, your campaigns are likely image-heavy by nature — product photos, speaker headshots, venue shots, sponsor logos, the hero banner that took three rounds of approval. It looks fantastic in your test send. Then it goes out to 10,000 people, and the whole campaign tanks on impact.

Here's what the weight of those beautiful images might actually be costing you.

How heavy images hurt you

Two seemingly identical emails, but one is more than 10x the size of the other

They load slowly on mobile

Most of your recipients open emails on a phone, often on patchy data on the way somewhere. A heavy email means images that hang, or a hero banner that's still a grey question mark by the time they've swiped away.

Gmail clips it

Go over ~102KB and Gmail hides the rest behind a "view entire message" link — burying your CTA and breaking your tracking in one move. Oversized images are one of the fastest ways to get there.

It burns energy for no reason

Every unnecessary kilobyte, multiplied across your whole list, is data transferred and stored, and energy spent to deliver a picture that could have looked identical at a fraction of the size. Email isn't free — and neither is a 4MB banner.

The usual fix is a chore

Smart resize of an image from over 5,000 pixels wide to just over 1,000 pixels wide

The frustrating part is that fixing it by hand is often tedious and easy to forget.

The solution is often something like this:

  1. Resize every image before you upload.
  2. Choose the best format for each image (photos prefer JPG, line art prefers PNG).
  3. Run each image through a compression tool to then optimise the file size further.
  4. Remember to do these steps every single time there’s a review or a tweak on every asset, forever.
  5. Miss one, and the whole campaign pays for it.

It's exactly the kind of invisible, repetitive task that slips when you're busy — which, before a big send, is always.

So we made it automatic

Format selection and compression to reduce an image file size from 1.7MB to 226KB

EcoSend now compresses every image in your campaign as you build it — automatically, in the background, with no visible loss in quality. You upload the full-resolution images you love; we deliver a version that's a fraction of the size and looks just as sharp in the inbox of each of your recipients.

That means faster loads, less clipping, lower carbon per send — and one less thing on your pre-send checklist.

The point isn't to make your emails plain or ugly — quite the opposite! It's to strip out the weight that was never doing any work, so the images that matter arrive fast and land well. Beautiful and light were always meant to be the same thing.

Try it now

86.7% reduction in file size with EcoSend image optimisation

There’s nothing to switch on and nothing to configure — if you're on EcoSend, image optimisation is already running on your next campaign. Log in, build as normal, and send something that looks great and travels light.

If you’re not yet using EcoSend, you can even try it out without signing up — just use our free email builder that’s now available for everyone!

Don’t say we’re not good to you…

Also, if you want to get geeky with me, hit reply with a recent campaign and I’ll tell you how much lighter it would have gone out by using EcoSend.

Until next time,

James
