Sustainability
We want our planet to thrive, so we put nature at the heart of everything we do.
Sustainable email? Really?
Sustainability may not be everyone's top concern when choosing an email platform, but we take it very seriously in everything we do.
Every feature, every line of code, and every hour of our day is spent on making EcoSend better for you.
It turns out, making things better for you, and for our planet, are almost always perfectly aligned.
A few ways EcoSend is better for you and the planet
- Optimised infrastructure: We optimise our infrastructure to use as little energy as possible. By building with the latest "serverless" technologies, we utilise energy only when you need us, and shut off infrastructure when you don't.
- Renewable energy: We run on one of the most energy efficient cloud providers, Amazon Web Services (AWS). In 2022, the electricity consumed in the U.S. East (Northern Virginia) region, where the majority of our infrastructure is based, was attributable to 100% renewable energy.
- Transparent reporting: Our free email campaign carbon calculator gives you insights into the climate impact of your email marketing campaigns. As a customer, EcoSend shows your estimated carbon footprint, and transparent metrics for our automated offsetting programs.
- Automatic carbon offsetting: We work with many partners including TreeApp and Tree-Nation to automatically offset the estimated carbon emissions of your campaigns. Your EcoSend account gives you visibility into these estimates, their calculations, and more information about all climate efforts.
Why sustainability matters in email marketing
Email marketing, much like the rest of our digital lives, has an environmental impact that often goes unnoticed.
Every email sent requires energy for processing, transmission, and storage.
With billions of emails sent daily, the cumulative environmental impact adds up into a problem worth tackling.
At EcoSend, we’re on a mission to making email marketing a force for good — for your business, your customers, and for the planet. We do as much as we possibly can to be a force for good on all things climate and nature.
Hosting powered by renewable energy
So we aim to use as little energy as possible — as a team, as a business, and as a software provider.
We currently host the majority of EcoSend with AWS (Amazon Web Services) in their US-East (Northern Virginia) region.
It's not easy finding a provider that can handle the breadth and depth of features we need to reliably run EcoSend at scale. Right now, we believe AWS is the best option.
Here are a few areas where AWS has proven to be strong on sustainability so far:
- Wherever possible we use AWS Graviton-based Amazon EC2 instances which use up to 60% less energy than comparable instances.
- AWS reported their Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is 1.15 — better than both the public cloud industry average of 1.25 and 1.63 for on-premises enterprise data centres. A lower PUE value indicates greater efficiency, with the theoretical minimum PUE being 1.0.
- In 2022, the electricity consumed in the U.S. East (Northern Virginia) region, where the majority of our infrastructure is based, was attributable to 100% renewable energy.
- Amazon's data centres are 7x more water-efficient than the industry average.
- AWS is using more lower-carbon materials to build data centres.
- AWS provides a Sustainability Console so we can measure and review the carbon emissions generated from our usage of their infrastructure.
Frequently asked questions
How does EcoSend measure its carbon footprint?
We regularly measure our carbon emissions across all aspects of our operations, including data centre energy consumption, network infrastructure, and business operations. We work with third-party experts to ensure accurate measurement and reporting of our environmental impact.
What makes EcoSend more sustainable than other email platforms?
EcoSend is built with sustainability at its core. We use renewable energy-powered infrastructure, maintain carbon-neutral operations, implement efficient data processing, and only serve purpose-driven organisations. Our selective approach helps maintain high standards and reduces environmental impact.
How can I make my email marketing more sustainable?
Start by cleaning your email list to remove inactive subscribers, optimise your content to reduce file sizes, implement proper segmentation, and focus on quality over quantity. EcoSend provides tools and guidance to help you implement sustainable email marketing practices.
Does EcoSend offset carbon emissions?
Yes, we offset our carbon emissions through verified carbon reduction projects, including renewable energy initiatives and forest conservation projects. We're committed to going beyond carbon neutral and are working toward carbon negative operations.
