Why Highlighting Sustainability Was The Real Jewel Of The Coronation Crown

King Charles III has long been an advocate for our planet

9 May 2023

On Saturday, 6th of May 2023, the world witnessed the coronation of King Charles III.

With 20 million people watching the ceremony in the UK alone, attention was brought to more than just the pageantry of the event. The coronation concert also saw a message from the King being played, where he spoke about the importance of environmental conservation.

Here are our thoughts from the EcoSend team on the impact of putting sustainability front and centre of the coronation festivities.

Plus, how our climate-conscious marketing tool can help you keep up the good work long after the bunting comes down.

It's Worth Remembering - King Charles III Started Talking About The Planet Before Most Of Us

At the coronation concert, William, Prince of Wales highlighted the King’s long affiliation with environmental sustainability.

William stated: “Coronations are a declaration of our hopes for the future. Take the natural world, he [Charles] warned us of the risks to our planet’s health, long before it was an everyday issue.”

As various performers took to the stage, a nature-themed light display powered by drones also lit up the Windsor night sky in the background.

With the newly crowned King having championed environmental causes long before it was a common talking point, it seemed fitting that sustainability, along with the issues our planet is facing, were clear themes throughout the coronation.

It is true that the topic of sustainability has taken far too long to become mainstream. However, all of the people who shine a light on the issue, plus develop solutions are now helping to drive change.

Could you be one of them?

We’ve discovered the brilliant work of many such people on our EcoSend Podcast

It’s fair to say that the path to sustainability can be difficult to navigate. But compared with ignoring the issue, any effort to learn how we can all reduce our carbon footprints as individuals and businesses is a step in the right direction.

Lasting Legacy Of The Coronation

Given the mass attention paid to the coronation and the themes around our planet, it’s time to capitalise on the potential positive impact this can have going forward.

Many ecocentric projects have already been planned to celebrate the coronation. This includes the establishment of new nature reserves, coastal paths and the aptly named ‘Coronation Woods’.

In a statement, the UK Government added: “As Prince of Wales, his Majesty has held a number of patronages of wildlife and conservation charities including the Wildlife Trusts.

“He has also worked to encourage the private sector to work to respond to climate change and increase their focus on sustainability with more than 500 CEOs as part of his Sustainable Markets Initiative.”

How Your Business Can Continue The Coronation Spirit For The Greater Good Of The Planet

We think it’s important that every business looks to do their bit for the planet.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to have huge budgets to make an impact, with even smaller steps having the potential to make a big difference.

Here are some steps businesses can take to reduce their carbon footprint:

  • Reduce energy consumption

  • Switch to a green energy provider

  • Use electric vehicles wherever possible

  • Limit waste generated by your business

  • Encourage sustainable behaviour

  • Educate your customers on sustainable practices

  • Complete a low-carbon renovation fit out of your office

  • Improve the ‘walk score’ of your business premises

  • Hold remote, rather than in-person events

  • Switch to a sustainable marketing platform
