It’s that time again where we are back with another EcoSend podcast episode.

This week, our CEO James sat down with Sanjay Lobo, MBE and CEO of onHand. For those unfamiliar with onHand, it is a platform that champions all things doing good in terms of the local community and the wider planet.

In a world with so much negativity, onHand offers a much-needed breath of fresh air highlighting the very best of humanity. Their social feeds in themselves are always extremely uplifting and inspiring, as they showcase all of the great work of everyone involved in good causes.

The theme of this week’s podcast is having a positive impact on the world. Sanjay tells us how he got started with his work, as he and James discuss how each of us can make a difference as individuals and businesses.

How onHand Came To Be – Deliveroo Concept But For Doing Good

Sanjay Lobo onhand ecosend podcast

Sanjay: “The idea at the time was how do you connect local people who want to do good with an older person who needs some help? You know, really basic help, like changing a light bulb or taking their bins out, or getting a meal in, or just, you know, basic company. Stuff that’s actually is really hard to match today cause there’s so much demand and not enough volunteers.

The idea came out of an incubator with a bunch of charities who kind of thought, well, we’ve got it wrong on how we’re recruiting volunteers. We make them go through so much training and then they have to commit to the same time every week for six months.

What if we could create an on demand platform like Deliveroo? But it’s not a takeaway. You’re browsing for doing good in your local community. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”

Your Employees Care About The Elderly, Youth Mentoring, Poverty, The Climate Crisis & Other Social Issues – Allow Them To Use This As A Force For Good

Sanjay: “As soon as we started working with businesses, we realised that employees care about older adults. But they also care about so many other issues that are going on such as youth mentoring, climate crisis, homelessness, food poverty, you know, all of the big things that are going on. There are lots, lots of ways to do societal good.

And during 2021, we start thinking about why companies are coming to us and wanting to do good. Essentially it’s all about impact.”

James: “Every week I have a call with an elderly person who you know, the people list themselves as wanting to have some company and I’m often the only person she might speak to on that given day. And that was certainly where I got started.

For us, as we progress, not only have we started changing our whole business and product, but as a team have started doing lots of social get-togethers, but also doing something in the local area such as litter pick or volunteering at a food bank.

You do one good thing and then before you know it, you are making all these changes in other parts of your life.

I feel so fulfilled when we’ve done a little pick and each of the team’s got a bag full of litter that would’ve otherwise been sort of floating around, probably ending up in a river somewhere.

You as an individual are winning. The company that signed up is winning the world, the planet is doing better as well. And it’s just quite a beautiful thing.”
