Wholegrain Digital was founded in 2007 by husband and wife, Tom and Vineeta Greenwood, with the aim of helping positive organisations to thrive online. They wanted to see whether they could create a truly sustainable business using design and tech for good.

Their customer-first approach led them to identify that WordPress was the perfect platform to meet their clients’ needs, so the company specialised and became London’s first WordPress agency. For over a decade, Wholegrain Digital have been using WordPress at scale for positive businesses, the public sector and charities.

Their passion for sustainability has driven the team to refine their process, become industry leaders in web sustainability and performance, helping to shift the industry towards a zero-carbon future.

We moved to EcoSend because of their dedication to not only offsetting their emissions through their global tree-planting partnerships, but also by actively reducing the emissions generated from email campaigns sent via their platform.

The challenge

Wholegrain Digital launched their newsletter, Curiously Green, back in 2019. More than 6,000 subscribers later, Wholegrain Digital were delighted to see the rapid growth of their audience. But as leaders in Digital Sustainability, they were aware this growth came with an increased digital footprint.

A Sustainability Newsletter needs a Sustainability-minded email platform. And so the team at Wholegrain Digital went looking for an email provider that could meet their requirements for deliverability and design, as well as the ability to absorb the digital footprint of their email campaigns.

Thanks to their systems – all powered by renewable energy – the size of an email sent through EcoSend can be up to a third smaller than other platforms, making switching a no-brainer.

Wholegrain Digital started by using EcoSend's dedicated MailChimp Import Function, making it a quick and simple process to transfer all of their contacts from MailChimp straight into their EcoSend Contacts area.

The migration ensured to preserve existing details of all subscribers, transferring all data directly into EcoSend.

Wholegrain Digital also gather further leads and users interested in all things Digital Sustainability, by adding an EcoSend Form to their site.

This Form sends new users' email addresses straight into their EcoSend Contacts area, and automatically adds contacts to receive future editions of Curiously Green. This ensures Curiously Green continues to grow and delight its audience.

A further benefit of Wholegrain Digital’s partnership with EcoSend, is EcoSend's tree planting partnership with Treeapp, which means that trees are planted every month to absorb the carbon emissions of every edition of Curiously Green sent from the platform.

Although each of our individual email footprints may be small when compared to other digital services, small things – such as regularly cleaning out our inboxes – can, collectively, make a big difference.
