What Is A Pop-up Form?

A pop-up form is a lead capturing tool that triggers a form to appear on your website at a specified time. It gives the opportunity for users to enter their details to sign up for your mailing list, and can also be used to offer incentives or discounts to encourage sales.

Lots of website form types exist. But with pop-up forms, they can be used to engage your visitors before they exit your website, or after they have completed a certain action.

By entering their details into your form, this can create long-term value for your marketing by adding new and engaged leads to your list.

What Are The Benefits Of Pop-up Forms?

👀 Attention grabbers: Pop-up forms are visually engaging. Use them to send a message that you can be sure won’t be missed!

⏰ Great for time-sensitive campaigns or promotions: Do you have a special promotion running, or do you want to offer a discount as an incentive? Pop-up forms are the way to go!

👱‍♀️ Grow your email subscriber list: Pop-up forms give users the opportunity to enter their details to willingly sign up for your mailing list. Adding engaged subscribers can boost open rates and overall email ROI.

🔐 Owned data list: Unlike social media, you own the data that users provide to you through your website form. This means you can’t lose access to your account, or even have the platform shut down. Instead, you’ll always have access to your list and ultimately, your leads!

🏗️ Fully customisable: Website owners can decide what information they’d like subscribers to give them. Use this information to learn more about your customers, and also be able to segment your list.

🌎 Eco-friendly lead generation: We can’t speak for all pop-up forms, but EcoSend Pop-up Forms are powered by renewable energy to reduce the carbon footprint of your campaigns!

Navigate to Forms > Create New Form

  1. Choose Type

Once you're in the Form creation area, choose "Pop-up" as the type of form you're creating.

  1. Build Your Form

To create a pop-up form, you simply need to select the fields you’d like to include on your form.

There is an extensive set of options for fields you can include in your form, including:

  • First name

  • Last name

  • Phone number

  • Phone number

  • Text field

  • CAPTCHA

  • Company size

  • Custom field

  • Email opt-in

  • Extended text field

How to choose what fields to add: Think about the data you need from your subscribers, especially in terms of making data-driven decisions across product or marketing.

Just remember to avoid unnecessary long or complex forms, as this can put off subscribers from completing the signup. That’s why it’s best to focus on the fields that will give you the most important information based on your business type, along with need to be able to segment your audience.

  1. Style Your Form

style your ecosend form

It’s time to consult your brand guidelines to make your pop-up form look right on point.

Find your hex codes and enter them in the fields to determine the colours for the form background, text, button, button text, success background and success text.

You’ll see a preview as you work making it easy to adjust the colours.

Help, I don’t know what my brand colours hex codes are!

Don’t panic - Canva has a fantastic free tool called Color Palette Generator where you can upload an image (i.e. a screenshot of your logo) to get all of your hex codes.

Hit ‘Copy’ and the hex code can then be automatically pasted into the EcoSend Pop-up Form Builder.

P.S. We’ve also included accessibility-friendly design options, plus the ability to automatically conform to Dark Mode.

  1. Trigger Options

pop up forms trigger options

Decide when you’d like your Pop-up Form to appear, depending on the behaviour of the user on your site.

For instance, would you like to display a discount code as they exit the page? Or, do you want the form to show after they have spent more than 60 seconds browsing your page?

Depending on the purpose of the page, you can customise the option so that the user's needs are met.

  1. Advanced Options

Advanced options for pop up forms
  • Duration success message will be shown

  • Enable double opt-in

  • Redirect URL

  • Success page heading

  • Success page text

  • Time between showing form again

All of the above are optional extras that allow you to customise your Pop-up Form in terms of where it sends users and also how frequently it displays on your website.

Adding the Form to your Website

Once you’ve finished building your form, an HTML snippet will be generated.

You will then need to paste this snippet into your website.

Most websites will allow you to add custom HTML elements. This includes popular CMS tools such as:

  • Drupal

  • Framer

  • Ghost

  • HubSpot CMS

  • Joomla

  • Shopify

  • Squarespace

  • Webflow

  • Weebly

  • Wix

  • WordPress

Pop-up Forms FAQs

Have more questions about pop-up forms? Discover some of the top queries below with answers from our digital marketing experts!

Are Pop-up Forms Effective For Lead Generation?

Absolutely! According to WiserNotify, website pop-ups have an average conversion rate of 11%. However, for the top performing pop-ups, this can be as high as 42.5%. Therefore, when used correctly pop-ups can be a winning strategy for your lead generation efforts.

How Can I Use Pop-up Forms To Increase My Email Subscribers?

A pop-up form will appear on your website at a specific time during the user journey, depending on how you customise your form.

What this does is engage with that user and encourage them to leave their details, rather than allowing them to leave and never return again. By grabbing that opportunity while they are on your website, you can build your email list so that you can continue to engage with all those who visit your website.

If you don’t use forms to build your subscriber list, the simple fact is that your list won’t grow. Since subscribers have just visited your website, they represent fresh and engaged leads. That’s why forms are so important.

What Are The Best Practices For Designing Pop-up Forms?

Like most things in life, a pop-up form works best when it is simple, to the point and also works correctly.

We recommend you design your pop-up form in line with your branding colours so that the form looks like it belongs on your website, which will also make it appear more trustworthy. Also, select the data fields which matter most to your marketing strategy, while also keeping the number of options to a minimum to encourage more signups.

Make sure you test your form once you add it to your website to ensure it works correctly and provides an excellent user experience.

Should I Use Exit-Intent Pop-ups On My Website?

You can customise your EcoSend Pop-up Form so that it appears as soon as a user goes to exit your website.

In general, exit intent pop-ups are known to significantly reduce cart abandonment, increase leads and also build your email subscriber list. So, they can be a fantastic tool especially as they provide one last chance to grab the visitor’s attention before they leave.

Can Pop-up Forms Improve User Engagement Without Disrupting User Experience?

When pop-up forms don’t consider the user experience, they can be annoying. However, EcoSend Pop-up Forms gives you lots of advanced options so that you control how and when your pop-up form will appear.

For instance, you can choose to delay when the form will appear so that it doesn’t show as soon as the user clicks on the page, making your form feel less intrusive. You can also experiment with these advanced options until you find what works for your website.

How Do I Measure The Effectiveness Of My Pop-up Forms?

When you use a form to collect subscribers, you should notice a steady uptake of new leads which you can then attribute to your form. However, you can also use analytics tools to track the origin of your subscribers, including the tools you’ll find on your EcoSend dashboard.

On the left hand sidebar in your dashboard, go to Contacts > All Contacts > Popup

This will give you a list of subscribers who have signed up for your listing using your Pop-up Form. You can see their name, email address and any other data you collected depending on the fields you opted for when building your form.
